wankee, u touch on a subject that's of great concern to me.  i m replying ur post by way of a email comment to reed as follows:

Dear Mr. Reed:

The facts you present of the Japanese are accurate.  But the world can not live on facts alone.  What's your underlying motive for making such a frank report?  And, more importantly, how are we going to get out of this jam.

As an old Chinese habit, I care more about the cause than the effect in a phenomenon.  And as a scientist, I m more interested in analyzing the underlying agenda, than judging just based on observable evidences.  And finally as an old fool, I volunteer myself to do the thankless job of seeking out the best possible future for the young and generations that follow.  To these ends, I m commenting your article with the following two views from the Asian perspective:

                                                   JAPAN'S SALVATION

To the West, Japan is a taste of their own medicine.  Japan presently is only behaving like a typical  Westerner country.  Maybe Japan's one mistake, unlike the real Western countries, is that it still retained the Asian's blunt honesty.  I have always suspected that Hitler is the secret role model for the modern West.  And Japan exposed this secret.

Similar to another American's documentary on Nanking Nightmare, this article also deepens the Sino-Japan wound.  With Bush's recent edging the Japanese on with new military alliance to defy China's accusations, and other Westerners' reminders of Japan's military and racist threats to other Asian countries, Japan is now cornered into an intelligent-designed course of action -- picking up from where it left off at the end of World War II.

But this is only a handful of Westerners and a small minority of Japanese(I heard on TV that only 11% Japanese go to the polls).  The true message the majority of the Japanese people need and are waiting to hear, for Japan's salvation, is that Japan is a member of the large Asian family.  The cause for the past distancing and split of the family, as well as today's animosity, is militarism under the guise of western-style modernization
.  But our old traditional common culture and racial roots can reunite us.  Let's not allow the blood and tear of our ancesters shed in vain.  Let's honor their efforts by bringing the family together.

CHINA AND JAPAN, BOTH NEED TO CLEAN HOUSE

Europe had its big showdown in the last world war.  Is it next the Asia's turn?  Historically, conflicts  aside, Asians tended to let cultural conversion win them the lasting peace.  China got this big by surrounding countries' forceful insistency to join up.  This model of world unification is what the world need today.

But both China and Japan took a wrong turn 100 years and 150 years ago, respectively.  They traded their cultures for materialism.  Calling it Westernization or modernization, but the irresistable agenda was militarism.  The western model of imperialism became the new rule of the game.  Being the torch bearer of the common Asian culture of confucianism and buddism, China resisted a good 50 years more from arming herself, and the consequence was a thorough thrashing by the West and its student Japan.  But Japan may faired even worse.  Besides of leaving an unwashable blood stain in Nanking, Japan is yet to deal with the humiliation of the gift of two abombs from her teacher, America, who has since used Japan as the major Asian outpost to keep all those wily Asian countries in military alertness.

It's high time both countries do its own house cleaning.  For Japan, she must reevaluate the merit of Meiji Restoration.  150 years ago, there was little Japan could do under the persuasive guns of Commandore Perrie.  But what is Japan's choice today?

For China, she must consider reversing the Westernization tide staked out by her father of democracy,
the Christian President Shoong Yat Sen.  Modernization is appearing and militarism equates national pride.  But now it should be obvious that these things are dangerously easy to attain.  So, can they wait until the world is brought back to a safe mode?  After all, China, the biggest country in the world, has the biggest responsibility.

Let me leave this writeup with a tidbit regarding a pivoting incident in the successful demonization of Japan.

I v just watched a documentary on Madame Chiangkaishit.  Her family and Shoong yat sen(brother in law), Chiangkaishit(hubby),Koongs(brother in law) one time owned 3/5 of China's Treasury during the most vulnerable and desperate times of war.  She single handedly legitimatize America's imperialism in Asia and smeared Japan, to this day, causing unreparable, and truly destructive, hatred between
China and Japan.  She naively turned an another routine colonization of China, this time, by Japan
into a war of slaughtering.  Why should China fight and die for the old-invader America's interest against
the new-invader Japan has never been explained.  The fact that no American military assistance came to China to prevent the slaughtering was a crime. Or, is it a prostitute's service unpaid?  If Choong Yat
Sen was the top dog of the West, then she's the top cat ready to moving in with the Americans.
Her shining example of materialism and opportunism taught many westernized Chinese how to become successful capitalists and made her a legend in the renegade regions of China.
